Almost every electrical fault announces itself through heat long before anything fails. A loose terminal, an overloaded cable, a damaged circuit breaker – all of these create contact resistances that heat up. With a thermal imaging camera you can find such spots during operation, without switching off the installation.
A thermal image only becomes meaningful through comparison: a terminal is not conspicuous because it is warm, but because it is warmer than the identical one next to it. Also make sure that the load situation is realistic – no fault shows up at no load – and pay attention to the emissivity of the surface, because bare metals reflect and quickly appear too cold.
