A clamp meter, also known as a digital clamp-on ammeter or current clamp, is a measuring instrument used for the indirect measurement of electrical current, for example by service technicians, in industry and in motor construction. The advantage of a clamp meter is that the circuit does not have to be broken in order to connect the instrument into the line, as is necessary for a direct measurement. Current can also be measured on systems that cannot simply be switched off. A digital clamp meter measures the current without contact, i.e. potential-free, by enclosing a single conductor. If the return conductor were enclosed as well, only leakage currents could be measured and the desired measurement would be distorted. As Testboy clamp meters can measure current, voltage, resistance and diode continuity, these instruments are among the indispensable measuring devices in the working day of electricians in particular. A digital clamp meter can equally be used at home: it makes it quick and easy to determine the consumption of individual electrical appliances if household electricity consumption seems unusually high or fuses trip regularly.
