Application

Testing charging infrastructure in compliance with standards

Every wall box and every charging station brings a testing task that did not exist in this form a few years ago. Charging points are electrical installations – they must be tested at commissioning and periodically thereafter. The special feature: without a connected vehicle, a Mode 3 type 2 charging point does not release any voltage. Measurement therefore requires an adapter that handles the communication and simulates a vehicle.

How to proceed

  • Visual inspection – check the mounting, cable routing, plug connections and protective devices of the charging equipment.
  • Connect the adapter – the test adapter handles communication with the charging station and makes the measuring points accessible.
  • Simulate charging states – check whether the charging station responds correctly to the vehicle states and only then releases the voltage.
  • Electrical measurements – carry out protective conductor continuity, insulation resistance, loop impedance and RCD tests with the installation tester.
  • Fault simulation and report – check the behaviour in the event of a fault and document the results.

Suitable instruments

Testboy TV 900

Test adapter for type 2 charging points

Handles communication with the charging station and simulates an electric vehicle – the prerequisite for being able to measure at all.

to e-mobility

Testboy TV 455 / TV 456

For the actual measurements

Installation testers according to DIN VDE 0100-600 for loop impedance, RCD testing and insulation measurement at the charging point.

to the installation testers

The scope of testing and the intervals depend on the respective installation, the manufacturer's documentation for the charging equipment and the applicable standards. Testing is reserved for qualified electricians.
